Because the Gospels were written by first century Jews who were writing to other first century believers, there was a lot of stuff that they really didn’t need to explain–and so they didn’t. That makes it tough for us to understand all the infighting and controversies between Yeshua (Jesus) and the different factions within Judaism. Fortunately, we have the writings of Josephus and groups like the Essenes to give us some information.
